Verse 13, 14

“Since the whole world is deluded by feelings resulting from the operation of the three properties, it is unaware of my imperishable essence that is beyond them.”

The sattva, rajas and tamas are all three very enchanting, the one entwined into them cannot come out of it. Tamas considered the lowest of the three is very appealing to people with tamasic gunas they find it totally irresistible, rajas being the middle one is also very hard to resist by the rajasic people as it is just like them which feels like ‘’truth’’, and they won’t find anything wrong indulging into it. And sattva the highest amongst all gunas is still a guna which is forgotten by the ones who follow it; they feel its totally the ultimate thing to follow and nothing except this exists. Which also leads to egotism that is the most difficult to break.

“This divine three propertied yog-maya of mine is most difficult to overcome, but they who seek refuge in me get over the illusion and achieve salvation.”

This three gunas are the maya that is most difficult to overcome. The ones who are into tamas know that it is low but still follow it, they can strive to rise to rajas or sattva. The ones who follow rajas know it is a bit better then tamas but their pride can make them fall to tamas or wish to rise can make them rise to sattva. The sattva being the best people strive to stay in it, and with the purity of it they find dignity which slowly turns into ego which they never know. And to get out of these three is extremely difficult.

But the true seekers who want to know Me, maya always makes a way to help them get to Me. As it’s Me only who is maya and I can make out who can cross the maya-veil and get Me.

Verse 11, 12

“I am, O the best of Bharat, the selfless power of the strong and I too, am the aspiration for realisation in all beings that is never hostile to God”

I am the selfless power of the strong, the strong people who use their power selflessly for the welfare and protection of other beings is God. And I am also the aspiration for realization that arises in men to achieve the supreme. The power the aspires men to move towards a path of self-realisation is also God, the determination that helps them stay firm on that path is also God.

“And know that although all the properties of nature (sattva, rajas, tamas) have arisen from me, they neither dwell in me nor do I dwell in them.”

The properties like sattva, rajas and tamas have arisen from God. God is the only maker of all these qualities that brings variety and quality in people’s lives. But God doesn’t dwell in it and neither these qualities dwell in God; as these qualities are the creation of Maya that is created by God and all the creation of Maya is illusory.

Verse 9, 10

“I am the fragrance in the earth, the flame in the fire, the Soul that animates all beings, and the penance of ascetics”

The fragrance that emits from the earth when wet is God, the flame that burns or gives warmth is God, the soul that animates all living beings and makes then come alive and move about according to their species is God, the penance that the ascetics pay while meditating is God. God is the sole being residing in all the living and non-living beings. There is nothing in this universe that cannot be called God.

Since I am also the intellect in wise men and the magnificence of men of glory, know you, O Arjun that I am the eternal fountainhead of all beings.”

The intelligence in wise men is also God and the dumbness that ignorant display is also God, the magnificence of men of glory is also God and the opposite of this is also God. God tells Arjun that he is the eternal fountainhead in all beings. He is the one who gives birth to himself which is known as the birth of living creatures and also nurtures them.

Verse 7, 8

“There is O Dhananjay not even one object other than me and the whole world is linked up with me like the pearls of a necklace.”

There is no object in this universe that is not is not Me, it is Me who is in all the 3 worlds, the Devas and Asuras are all my forms of maya, the stars and the entire cosmos composed of several galaxies are all my forms. There is nothing in this world that is not me. It’s all composed of me and everything is linked up with me like pearls in a necklace.

“O Arjun, I am that which makes water liquescent, the radiance in the sun and the moon, the sacred syllable om the words echo in the ether, and I am also the manliness in men.”

Lord says its me who is in everything, its me who makes the water liquescent so that it can flow, the radiance in the sun and moon is also me. The sacred syllable that manifested during the creation process is also Me, and the word that echoes in the ether is also Me, and also the manliness in man is also me. In short there in nothing in this world that isn’t me. Every good and bad thing as might be perceived are all forms of me.

Verse 5, 6

“This nature O the mighty-armed, is the lower insensate nature, but against it there is my conscious, living nature which animates the whole world.”

The nature that we live in is the insensible nature, but along with this there is a nature that is living and because of that nature there is life in this world and it makes this world living and it is of higher nature. The soul that we have is also a part of that nature that gives life to our body that is composed of the lower natured 5 elemental body.

“Know that all beings arise from these two natures and that I am both the creator and the end of the whole world.”

God himself is the creator and destroyer of this nature. When there is a desire to manifest he takes form of nature that begins creating beings on its own and then the world becomes fulfilling of creatures and beings. And when this desire to sustain diminishes then God himself destroys the nature that was created by him.

Verse 3, 4

“Hardly does one man among thousands strive to know me and hardly does one among the thousands who strives for this know my essence.”

Among the many many people who exist in this world only one man amongst thousands strives to know Me and among such thousands of men only one is able to know my true essence.

Pleasures of the senses are so attractive and enchanting that they bind people beyond imagination, humans after crossing 84 lakhs of births in different yonis finally get human body, and with the flexibility and intelligence given to them in human body sweeps their feet away in the mayaic world. But when their good karmas start diminishing is than when they start seeing pain in the world. The maya world no more than looks pleasing to them and they start looking for ultimate pleasures that will last forever. And that is when they start getting into knowing the divine and one among thousand such men truly know the real essence of the divine.

“I am the creator of all nature with its eight divisions earth, water, fire, ether,, mind, intellect and ego.”

The God himself is the creator of the eight divisions of nature that is the earth, fire, water, mind, intellect and ego. These are part of lower nature as they are always undergoing change. And then there is higher nature that is changeless and always constant. This simply implies the face that every human has different nature from a shallow point of view. And yet we all are made from the same substance and are always unchangeable which constitutes from the higher nature qualities and which will always stay the same.

Chapter 7, Verse 1,2

“The Lord said ‘listen O Parth, to how by taking refuge in me and practising yog with devotion, you shall know me beyond any doubt as the all-perfect Soul is all beings.”

Now Krishna asks Arjun to listen to him carefully as he is going to reveal to him the knowledge that will help him to know the paramatman completely without any doubt in all souls that exist in all beings. Krishna wants Arjun to listen to the wisdom and take in everything that he is giving. What Krishna is giving in the Bhagwad Geeta is quite deep and profound knowledge that needs to be revised repeatedly several times to get understood, which sages, aspirants are doing since centuries till now to understand this powerful wisdom and yet feel they are not quenched by it completely. Krishna knows that the Geeta that Arjun is listening to through the mouth of yogeshwar himself is never going to be repeated again and so the knowledge needs to be grasped at once when said. And so he asks Arjun to listen to him carefully.

“I shall fully teach you this knowledge as well as the all-pervasive action that results from realisation of God after which there remains nothing better in the world to know.”

The yoga which Krishna is going to reveal to Arjun is something that will help him to know that knowledge as well as action that will help him to know God better and in such a way that he will not need to know anything else then this. The knowledge will be such that there may be nothing more needed to know then that in this world. Krishna wants Arjun to sink into the knowledge fully and so tells him the importance of the knowledge and greatness of the knowledge that he is about to get.

Verse 46, 47

“Since yogi is superior to men who do penance or men who follow the path of discrimination, or men who desire the fruits of action, O Kurunandan, you should be a doer of selfless action.”

A yogi is superior to all men, men who do penance are also inferior to him. As practising penance is doing what is not comfortable to your body, or it’s like torturing your body. The people who follow the path of discrimination are also inferior to this yogi, as this kind of people always find differences in things and people whereas this yogi would find the same ‘lord’ in everything he sees. The person who desires fruits of his actions is also inferior to this yogi as he always keeps ‘wanting’ things that he desires and often fails in getting everything he desires, but a true yogi will always opt for desires of the Creator who has laid the mayaic creation and so he will always be kept fulfilled by his needs.

“Among all yogi I think that one the best who is dedicated to me and who, abiding in the self always adores me.”

The best yogi is the one who is dedicated to God and accepts himself and adores God. The man can get best out of his life when he cares for himself as he too is the God’s creation he loves. And also love towards the divine. This alone are the two realities that man needs to accept and adore after which there is nothing more left for him to do. He will surely be the best yogi.

Verse 44,45

“Although he is lured by objects of sense, the merits of his previous life indeed draw him towards God and his aspiration for yog enables him to go beyond the material rewards promised by the Ved.”

Although this man will be firstly lured by sense objects and pleasures. But his past life’s good karmas will not allow him to slip away in this maya. The past karmas and the practises of yog always draw him towards that path and he goes beyond the material world. This knowledge is also given as a promise in the Vedas.

“The yogi who has purified his heart and mind through several births by intense meditation and thus rid himself of all sins, attains to the ultimate state of realizing God.”

The yogi who goes through many birth cycles by practising yog and intense meditation, rids himself of all sins. The yogi who begins to walk on the path in some birth usually has many accumulated sins in his karmas and he cannot go anymore forward in that way. Law of Karma will make him suffer and ‘realize’ the goodness that lies around this universe in of course a different way. This man then takes up path of yog and keeps practising and getting higher and higher. He would need more than one birth to raise his vibrations and reach the divine. But finally he would surely attain God.

Verse 42,43

“Or he is admitted to the family of discerning yogi and such a birth is truly the most rare in the world.”

Or he is born in the family of a discerning yogi who would be in search positively for self-realization and to grow up with such a man would be rather a rare birth. As the soul born will also get a chance to grow with his parents.

“He naturally bears with him into his new birth the noble impressions of yog from his previous existence, and by dint of this he strives well for perfection (that comes from realisation of God.)”

The mark of his previous birth’s good karma’s stay with him. The soul carries the mind which stores all the info and this way when it goes into a new body it will still possess the memories of the past karmas. And so the good karmas will start bearing good fruits for him.
